Facing Vicolo del Pozzo, is Vicolo Buio, which leads to a small
courtyard without any outlets. A few meters further along Via
di Mezzo to the right are two more passageways, Vicolo Stretto
and Vicolo Chiaro which connect up with Via della Rota. Once
again you curve down one way and then the other and then on
the right is Via della Misericordia which rises up towards Via
della Speranza and Piazza Verzani or San Felice. Another descent
plus another curve along the Via di Mezzo and then off to the
left is Via della Fontana. Before this turn off, on the left,
is another historic palazzo as indicated by the text on the
stone plaque:
ON 19 MARZO 1862
AN ASSEMBLY WAS HELD IN THIS HOUSE
UNDER THE AUSPICES
OF GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI
AND ANTONIO MORDINI
AND IN THE SPIRIT OF THE RISORGIMENTO
AND THE FLOURISHING OF LIBERAL INSTITUTIONS
THE PEOPLE OF BARGA
FOUNDED THE BROTHERHOOD OF ARTISANS
IN CELEBRATION OF THE FIFTIETH YEAR
OF THIS SOCIETY
P.
The
plaque is mounted on the facade and is one of many which record
important and significant moments in the history of Barga. In
this case, the occasion is the founding of a society for mutual
help, the "Fratellanza Artigiana" (Brotherhood of
Artisans) which took place in 1862 under the auspices of Antonio
Mordini and of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was its first honarary
president.

The
via di Mezzo comes to an end at the Porta Macchiaia a few metres
past the turn off to Via della Fontana. Just before this, to the
right, is where the Via della Speranza begins, climbing steeply
upwards until it reaches the stairway which leads to the area
of the Aringo. Here you can stop for a much deserved rest and
to admire the panorama and the Cathedral.
Porta Macchiaia.
Via
della Speranza is not very long and there is not much to stop
for along the way. A few tens of metres from its beginning, on
the right, just before reaching the Piazza Verzani, you will find
a little church dedicated to San Felice and the headquarters of
the Confraternity of the Misericordia, the standard bearer of
all the voluntary societies active today in Barga. This Confraternity,
which was set up in Barga some years ago, runs the ambulance service
and is concerned with the transport of the sick and the wounded
and with emergency first aid. It can be reached via the telephone
number 118.
Church
of San Felice - San Francesco da Paola (17th Cent.)
After
the church and still on the right, is Piazza Verzani which is
flanked by Via della Speranza on its western side. On the other
side of the street there is a particularly beautiful view which
merits a short stop and allows those less fit to catch their breath.
Immediately below you can see the rocky banks of the Ripa, and
at the end of the little valley, the fosso of the Latriani. On
the hill opposite you can see the green slopes of the nearby villages
of Ortici, Serra, Buvicchia, Gragnana and Fondamento, where a
few scattered farm houses and the occasional villa, of recent
construction, create a picturesque bucolic scene. If you lift
your gaze upwards towards Pegnana, Tiglio and the mountains of
the Tuscan-Emilian Appenines you will have an idea of the view
ahead, once you have climbed up to the Aringo.
Proceeding
then up to the Duomo, after crossing Via della Misericordia and
Via della Rota which comes up from Via di Mezzo, you pass by the
high stone wall which, on the left, supports the open space of
the Aringo. On the right you pass the Church of the Santissima
Crocifisso, as mentioned before.
