New look to barganews ... what do YOU think ?

A new look to the blogs on barganews... we have been experimenting with a new system to blog up daily articles onto the front page and now, finally, it is ready to roll.

We have moved across from using software running on the blogger.com servers to using software running on our own barganews.com servers. This should mean that the whole system should be running a good deal faster and it can now be much more interactive.

You can make comments easily on all of the articles and get your opinions in front of the other readers in double quick time.

A new barganews webcam is now running at the top of all the articles so that you can see at a glance just what the weather is like here today.

(A big thankyou to @man for his help in coding)

7th Trofeo Burraco Sotto le Stelle

The 7th night time Burraco tournament took place this evening in Barga Giardino with 50 tables set out for the contestants to pit their wits against each other and against lady luck with a pack of cards.

Last year the tournament took place down at the Barga swimming pool and as we said in that article, the organisers expected more people to take part in this growing community activity ... they were correct as this year that numbers have jumped from around 50 to nearer 150.

Opera Barga - Brahms, Chopin and Liszt in the Teatro

Exhibition of the exquisite decaying tiles of Enzo Scuderi

Cotto di Terre Sonore - the tiny exhibition of the exquisite tiles of Enzo Scuderi in Barga Vecchia is on until the end of this month in Barga Vecchia.

The space is small but crammed full with his work on ageing terracotta tiles; each one an exercise in decaying time frozen and held still.

Wonderful graphic images showing an elevated technical skill but still managing to crank up the emotional impact.

The mould, lichen and decaying surface of each tile speaks out and around the images. Each mark, scratch, stain and drawn line gives the feeling that it should be just there. Crafted, witty, intelligent and surprisingly emotionally engaging objects - not to be missed.

New book by Fernando Vergamini presented in Barga

A new book by Fernando Vergamini was presented in Barga Vecchia this evening. The book called "C'era una volta" recounts the life of the contadini in this area of two and three generations ago and is illustrated with photographs of the miniature tools and instruments that Fernando has been making over the years.

Until recently, he was a regular visitor to Barga on the monthly Sunday markets with his specially converted Ape which was a travelling showcase for his perfectly scaled down handmade miniature tools.

Michela Lombardi Quartet play Piazza Angelio

The barganews award winning photographer O'Connor was out and about in the piazzas of Barga Vecchia to record some images of the various groups, bands, people and events.

Instead he returned to base this evening with his just one set of images and all from Piazza Angelio.

The Michela Lombardi Quartet were playing in the piazza but for some reason or other, O'Connor omitted to point his camera at the male musicians in the group and instead took only images of Michela Lombardi.

Operabarga Festival 2005 continues with Haydn and Bartok in Piazza Angelio this evening with a concert by the Ensemble Le Musiche

Exhibition of photographs by Hafner-Salvi at Casa Cordati

Exhibition of photographs at Casa Cordati by Stefanie Hafner and Caterina Salvi.

Well worth the visit to see how two different photographers react and produce images based on the works and museum that houses them of Bruno Cordati. A cooly understated exhibition that belies some of the powerful images on the walls.

The square format of both works helps to pull the show together and give it a cohesiveness and direction.

Stefanie Hafner brings some wonderful subtle coloured images lit by natural light and the black and white images that Debbie Salvi produces become more evocative with each passing year. Perhaps somebody has been studying the idea that "less means more".

Writer driving 50cc Ape from Barga to Utrecht broken down

Remember the Dutch writer Miriam Goudappel, who bought a brand new bright Ferrari red 50 cc Ape from the Piaggio factory at Pontedera and was intending to take the ape, powered by its single cylinder 50 cc engine, for a spin ?

..... well, in fact she is intending to take it home ... to Holland ! ... to Utrecht, more than 2000 kms north to be precise.

No radio, no tape player, no CD or MP3 player to interrupt her thought patterns as she winds her way slowly north. She is writing a book on philosophy and decided that the cockpit of the tiny Ape would be the perfect place in which to be alone and think while she gradually drives up through Europe. Intending to drive for only short bursts, she has given herself 40 days to get from Barga to Utrecht.

Well the latest news is not good news;

at the moment i am stuck at Vonnas; my ape has some serious motorproblems, and, being in France, that's quite hard. parts have to be ordered from Italy, so i am already here for more than a week. i hope to be back on the road again ASAP

For those who need details, so far Miriam since leaving Barga has passed through (slowly) the following places:

Bar "Il Bino " reopens after extensive renovations

As we reported at the start of June, the "Bino" bar down in Giardino was shut for major renovations for a month. They took slightly longer but are now completed and the bar is once again back in business ... the wait was well worth it though.

A transformation has taken place.

La Festa delle Piazzette 2005

Many visitors to Barga Vecchia this evening for the start of the La Festa delle Piazzette 2005 ...10 days of live music, food and art to suit all tastes in each and every piazza in the Castle.

A full Piazza Angelio rocked to the music of Solco di Stato (last seen with slightly less hair and under a different name at the barga jazz club) and a new piazza this year below S.Felice run by the Lake Angel's drew in an appreciative audience for the semi acoustic mini version of Jack's Pack (just three instead of the usual full Pack of 8)

*gossip* .....word on the street is that Jack's Pack have included in their stage act a female dance troupe .... seems there have been secret practice dance sessions going on at a rehearsal studio in Barga Vecchia over the past few weeks .... could well be that the dance troupe makes their debut in Piazza Angelio when the Pack play next Friday ...watch this space for more details

Opera Barga production stopped by German Court

Regular readers will have noticed on the front page that one of the barganews blogs has an eyecatching bright new colour. The eyewatering yellow/green colour that now shouts out of the page is there so that people will notice the Operabarga blog.

Click on the blog to read the complete story and all the latest news on what is turning into a terrible event for the Operabarga production.

The court in Dusseldorf ruled for a suspension of all shows and coproduction activity on behalf of altstadtherbst kulturfestival dusseldorf with regard to the staging of Motezuma in Dusseldorf in September. The ruling has made it impossible for the Opera Barga management to go ahead with its production of the work, seeing as the court decision effectively involves the singers of German nationality in the cast to refrain from taking part in a production of the Berlin Motezuma score even abroad.

Consequently the Opera Barga Festival will perform a revised version of the opera that will not include any of the music protected by the presumed right that the Singakademie claims over the work. The show however will be presented virtually in its entirety, with the libretto spoken by the singers and the arias replaced by others from other arias of a similiar rhythm and colour.

Nicholas Hunt from Opera Barga has stated that:

"Opera Barga in fact wishes to publicly thank everyone, and in particular Federico Sardelli, Uwe Schmitz-Gielsdorf and the entire cast for the effort and enthusiasm with which they have faced this difficult and completely unprecedented situation.

This being said, the rights issue over the Opera is far from over. Singakademie claim to have sole rights to the opera on the basis of an article of law that is meant to protect scholarship and reseach investments aimed to unearth long lost works. If this is actually the idea behind the law, then Singakademie have done nothing and invested very little in order to procure themselves this right, and the right might be just as well attributed to Steffen Voss, the first to recognise the fragment for what it was, or even Federico Sardelli who has worked on revising the score for performance, a fact that cannot be denied seeing as it was his version of the score that was performed in the world premiere in Rotterdam in June with the Count's very costly blessing.

Our hope is that the production that we and our German partners have been working on for the past year may in the future see the light, perhaps in Dusseldorf in September. And that the world becomes aware that if this right is acknowledged, musical and even literary scholarship, as well as performance may suffer tremendously, as everyone attempts to lay claim to rights of presumably unpublished works that are no longer under copyright."

so why has it been so quiet here lately?

As people have already been pointing out, its got very quiet on barganews recently. There are a couple of reasons.

The main one is that we are in the middle of a move. Yes, we are finally opening a barganews.com office in Barga Vecchia. We did have an office near to the Comune a couple of years ago but moved out to let the Information Office take over. This time we are opening an office in Piazza Angelio and should have it up and running as soon as telecom puts in some wires so that we can connect with the world.

The second reason for the lack of articles is that we have been experimenting with some new software to enable us to page up articles and images a good deal quicker than the present system.

We have been using a blog software which runs on third party servers and sometimes gets clogged at peak times. We are now running our own blogging software on our own servers which should speed things up a bit. All should be ready in a couple of days (fingers crossed)

A sneak preview can be seen here

Short films on barganews - have your say

As internet speeds have gradually got faster, it has become easier to put up quite large files on the net for people to download.

OK, this is a test to see if the readers of barganews think that it is worth while moving into video.

This is a small video lasting just 40 seconds taken in Barga Vecchia this afternoon. The size of the file is just over one MB and should only take a short time to download for most dial up users and should load as it is being watched for most broadband readers.

Is this a direction that we should be going in or is it too early for many of our readers still on dial up ?

There is a comments button below this article, please use it and let us know what you think.

DAILY IMAGES from June

.... and we move forwards into the summer with the Daily Images from the award winning photographer O'Connor and his images taken on the streets of Barga during the month of June. Included this month are some interesting images of the sculptures of Franco Pegonzi where he has taken to heart the title of the exhibition "Pegonzi in Barga " and attempted to not just show the graceful lines of the sculptures but also the background; the colours of the walls and stone in Barga itself.

An exhibition of paintings and sculpture by the artist Sara Massocco from Bagni di Lucca opened this afternoon at the Casa Cordati Gallery in Barga Vecchia.

The exhibition is tilted "Metamorfosi" and the above images quite neatly demonstrate in what direction Sara has been working with her new work and why she chose that name to describe her show at here in Barga Vecchia.

Her painting entitled "The Pope-Condor" is sure to to be at the centre of discussion over the coming weeks.

The exhibition runs from today 1st July until 15 July
