Dream-Like Visions – a Personal exhibition by Mariano Moriconi held at Via Ponte Vecchio, Barga from 14th June right through till the 17th August 2014
A few lines by way of an introduction….
Figures and faces which overlap to merge with the material of the walls and windows in a swirling of lights and shadows; grotesque characters, hands, feet, objects and many colours appear with arrogance through closed eyes in those fleeing moments from wakefulness to deep sleep.
They are fragments of the days events, which in a timeless dimension of transition mingle with memories of times gone by and of ancestral reminiscences.
The result of these sensations are seen in more than 50 photographs that I am showing with
this exhibition…..
Within the exhibition you will also find a surreal metaphysical setting of a ‘dream like state’ often linked to the “bathroom”.
Within a sterile environment, an individual is photographed on the toilet, the photos on show are attached to the tiles on the walls, they “bare all” of what is, a very personal function, a private moment.
Close to the sink a giant hand reminds us of the use of soap and water: the person while washing his hands looking up sees his reflection in the mirror, but instead of his face there is a “smiley” puzzled he looks around and notices the presence of the smiley’s of various sizes scattered throughout the room. Aware of the Kafka type status of his situation and having no signal on his cell phone to call for help, sees an old phone on the wall and decides to use it, while dialling realises that there no numbers .. but lots of ‘smileys’ staring at him with a smile, in his disturbing situation.
His head starts spinning, a high-pitched buzzing in his ears, his legs give way and slumped against the wall with his back….slides down and collapses in a heap to the ground, in that moment he sees a pen hanging by a thread and decides to leave a message written on the tiles….
Perhaps I have allowed myself to be carried away by the story .. 🙂 the ‘smiley’ also represents being happy, that happiness that we have been missing now for a number of years, oppressed by this system, which has led us to a material poverty and above all, loss of values.
Let’s use this cute little face as a symbol of hope.
You can physically take one with you, they are at the door into the bathroom.
