The Galleria Comunale of Barga once again welcomed the work of Petra Wend with Portraits 3, which opened on Saturday, 19 July. This third instalment in an evolving series presented a new collection of portrait studies and glimpses of daily life in Barga.
The mostra concentrates on Petra Wend’s contemporary Barga neighbours, along with notable characters from the open-air theatre of life in the town’s atmospheric center. All of them are immediately recognisable, and not simply because Wend is gifted with a marvellous ability to capture likeness. Far more important, she has an acute sensitivity to what lies below a subject’s public guise: character, personality, shadows of doubt and bright currents of pure infectious joy. “It’s all in the seeing, the observing,” she says, as though perceptive insight was a common tool that everyone might all employ if they just gave it a try.- Frank Viviano
On show until 3 August, the exhibition featured faces both familiar and new—Italian and international residents who call Barga home, as well as models from an American portrait group based in Cleveland. Alongside these were still lifes and observational sketches from everyday scenes, each offering an intimate perspective on the rhythms and relationships that define the city.
“My aim is to capture more than a likeness,” Wend explained. “I’m interested in mood, light, small details—the quiet things that tell a story.”
Part of the InComune project—launched in 2021 by Giorgia Madiai and Kerry Bell and curated by Gian Guido Grassi—the exhibition supported the creative bond between artists and the Serchio Valley. Promoted by the Comune di Barga, the initiative promotes dialogue between contemporary art and local identity.

La Galleria Comunale di Barga ha accolto nuovamente il lavoro di Petra Wend con Portraits 3, inaugurata sabato 19 luglio. Questo terzo capitolo di una serie in continua evoluzione ha presentato una nuova raccolta di studi di ritratto e scorci di vita quotidiana a Barga.
In mostra fino al 3 agosto, l’esposizione ha proposto volti sia noti che nuovi—residenti italiani e internazionali che hanno scelto Barga come casa, oltre a modelli di un gruppo americano di ritrattisti con sede a Cleveland. Accanto a questi, nature morte e schizzi d’osservazione tratti dalla vita quotidiana, offrivano uno sguardo intimo sui ritmi e sulle relazioni che definiscono la città.
«Il mio obiettivo è catturare più di una semplice somiglianza», ha spiegato Wend. «Mi interessano l’atmosfera, la luce, i piccoli dettagli—le cose silenziose che raccontano una storia.»
Parte del progetto InComune—lanciato nel 2021 da Giorgia Madiai e Kerry Bell e curato da Gian Guido Grassi—la mostra ha sostenuto il legame creativo tra gli artisti e la Valle del Serchio. Promossa dal Comune di Barga, l’iniziativa incoraggia il dialogo tra arte contemporanea e identità locale.
