On Sunday, 27 July, the atrium of Barga’s town hall hosted the opening of a striking exhibition by Brian Owens —an evocative blend of misty Atlantic skies and the golden light of Tuscany. The event offered a meeting point between two geographies, two emotional palettes: the raw weather of the Celtic coast and the soft warmth of the Italian hills.
Owens, born and raised between Ireland and Scotland, grew up under shifting skies and windswept rain. These elemental forces left their mark, shaping an artist whose work is steeped in mood and memory. His chosen medium—watercolour on heavyweight paper—allows for subtle layering and transparency, creating paintings that feel like glimpses into inner landscapes.
Educated at Cardiff College of Art and later at the University of Ulster, Owens built a successful career in visual media, including stints as a creative director, TV design manager, and film producer. But it was teaching—and painting—that called him back. Today, he divides his time between education and art, pouring decades of visual experience into work that celebrates light, shadow, and sensation.
For over thirty years, Owens has returned annually to Barga, a city he calls his “second home.” His exhibition captured that meeting of worlds—where the wildness of the north meets the clarity of the Mediterranean and revealed an artist still exploring, still translating weather into emotion.

Domenica 27 luglio, l’atrio del Palazzo Comunale di Barga ha ospitato l’inaugurazione di una suggestiva mostra dell’artista Brian Owens — un incontro evocativo tra i cieli nebbiosi dell’Atlantico e la luce dorata della Toscana. L’evento ha offerto un punto di congiunzione tra due geografie, due tavolozze emotive: il clima rude della costa celtica e il calore morbido delle colline italiane.
Owens, nato e cresciuto tra l’Irlanda e la Scozia, è stato formato da cieli cangianti e piogge battenti. Queste forze elementari hanno lasciato un’impronta profonda, plasmando un artista il cui lavoro è intriso di atmosfera e memoria. Il mezzo scelto—acquarello su carta pesante—permette sovrapposizioni sottili e trasparenze, creando opere che sembrano scorci su paesaggi interiori.
Formatosi al Cardiff College of Art e poi all’Università dell’Ulster, Owens ha costruito una carriera di successo nei media visivi, ricoprendo ruoli come direttore creativo, responsabile del design televisivo e produttore cinematografico. Ma è stata la didattica—e la pittura—a richiamarlo. Oggi divide il suo tempo tra l’insegnamento e l’arte, riversando decenni di esperienza visiva in opere che celebrano la luce, l’ombra e la percezione.
Da oltre trent’anni, Owens torna ogni anno a Barga, una città che definisce la sua “seconda casa.” La sua mostra ha colto quel punto d’incontro tra mondi—dove la selvatichezza del nord incontra la chiarezza del Mediterraneo—rivelando un artista che continua a esplorare, a tradurre il clima in emozione.
