Monte Forato is a mountain in the Apuan Alps which has two peaks of similar height and size, little more than 1.200 mts but the feature which gives the name of this mountain is the presence of a natural arch between the two peaks formed by the erosion of water and wind on the limestone .
The hole measures about 30 meters in diameter and the thickness of the rock which forms the arch is about 8 meters.
It is therefore considered one of the largest natural arches in Italy.
If the conditions are right and you are in the right place at the right time, it is possible twice a year, on the 30th – 31st January and the 11th – 12th November to see the doppio tramonto – the double sunset viewed from outside the Duomo in Barga Vecchia.
This is when the sun drops down behind the mountains in the distance and then shines through the natural arch of the Monte Forato.
This eagerly awaited event generally draws a crowd at the Duomo as they wait for the sun to dip below the horizon, only to re-appear seconds later.
A full day early and low cloud until the very last moment but just a slight touch of the sun inside the natural arch of the Monte Forato – perfect timing for the spectacular natural event.

Monte Forato è una montagna delle Alpi Apuane con due vette di altezza e dimensioni simili, poco più di 1.200 metri. Tuttavia, la caratteristica che dà il nome a questa montagna è la presenza di un arco naturale tra le due cime, formato dall’erosione dell’acqua e del vento sulla roccia calcarea.
Il foro misura circa 30 metri di diametro, mentre lo spessore della roccia che forma l’arco è di circa 8 metri.
È quindi considerato uno dei più grandi archi naturali d’Italia.
Se le condizioni sono favorevoli e ci si trova nel posto giusto al momento giusto, è possibile assistere due volte all’anno, il 30–31 gennaio e l’11–12 novembre, al doppio tramonto, visibile dall’esterno del Duomo di Barga Vecchia.
In questo fenomeno, il sole tramonta dietro le montagne in lontananza per poi riapparire pochi istanti dopo attraverso l’arco naturale del Monte Forato.
Questo attesissimo evento richiama generalmente una folla al Duomo, in attesa di vedere il sole scomparire sotto l’orizzonte per poi riapparire subito dopo.
Un giorno di anticipo e nuvole basse fino all’ultimo momento, ma un leggero tocco di sole all’interno dell’arco naturale del Monte Forato – tempismo perfetto per questo spettacolare evento naturale.
