This morning at the Prefettura in Lucca, Paolo Lucchesi of the
Pasticceria Fratelli Lucchesi was awarded the Onorificenza al Merito della Repubblica Italiana conferita dal Presidente della Repubblica and is the highest civilian award in Italy.
The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) was established on 3 March 1951 by Law No. 178, during the presidency of Luigi Einaudi, Italy’s second president and is the highest civilian honour in Italy.
It was created to replace earlier honours from the Kingdom of Italy and recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation in areas such as arts, literature, economy, public service, social, philanthropic, and humanitarian activities. So, as of now, it has been in existence for 73 years.
The Pasticceria of the two brothers, Paolo and Fabio Lucchesi has been well documented here on barganews with many articles over the years featuring their very successful business.
The Pasticceria Lucchesi follows on a family tradition started by their father and uncle who used to run the Onesti bar back in the early 70s.
They then moved their operations twice over the years before finally starting up the present Bar and Pasticceria Lucchesi in 2003 (that article can be seen here) where they and a staff of 25 people now make chocolate and pastries in their own bakery and specialist kitchens.
Fabio Lucchesi died suddenly in 2011 after just celebrating his 41st birthday but in those short years he had managed to touch so many people and his part in the success of the Pasticceria Fratelli Lucchesi was remembered this morning by Paolo and his family and friends.
Apart from the machine which now rolls out the pastry, replacing the work once done by rolling pins, all the other tasks in the process are done by hand and in the traditional manner. An incredible time consuming process, and one which unfortunately is no longer being taught as the Master Bakers all over Italy gradually retire and their place is taken by a machine. In fact, there is only one school of Pasticceria remaining in Italy – the time-honoured experience and know-how is generally passed from father to son while they work.
In 2007 the City of Barga gave its highest honour, the Premio San Cristoforo d’Oro to the Lucchesi brothers. (article here) Named for Barga’s ancient patron, Saint Christopher, the award is presented to celebrate extraordinary contributions to the town and its people.

Questa mattina, presso la Prefettura di Lucca, Paolo Lucchesi della Pasticceria Fratelli Lucchesi ha ricevuto l’Onorificenza al Merito della Repubblica Italiana conferita dal Presidente della Repubblica, il più alto riconoscimento civile in Italia.
L’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana è stato istituito il 3 marzo 1951 con la Legge n. 178, durante la presidenza di Luigi Einaudi, il secondo presidente della Repubblica Italiana, ed è il massimo riconoscimento civile del Paese.
Creato per sostituire le onorificenze del Regno d’Italia, riconosce individui che hanno dato un contributo significativo alla nazione in campi come le arti, la letteratura, l’economia, il servizio pubblico, le attività sociali, filantropiche e umanitarie. Ad oggi, esiste da 73 anni.
La pasticceria dei due fratelli, Paolo e Fabio Lucchesi, è stata documentata più volte su barganews con molti articoli che raccontano il successo della loro attività.
La Pasticceria Lucchesi porta avanti una tradizione familiare iniziata dal padre e dallo zio, che gestivano il Bar Onesti negli anni ‘70. Successivamente, l’attività è stata trasferita due volte, prima di avviare nel 2003 l’attuale Bar e Pasticceria Lucchesi (l’articolo può essere visto qui), dove oggi, insieme a un team di 25 persone, producono cioccolato e pasticceria nel loro laboratorio e nelle cucine specializzate.
Fabio Lucchesi è morto improvvisamente nel 2011, poco dopo aver festeggiato il suo 41° compleanno. In quegli anni, seppur brevi, ha lasciato un’impronta profonda, e il suo contributo al successo della Pasticceria Fratelli Lucchesi è stato ricordato questa mattina da Paolo, insieme alla famiglia e agli amici.
A parte la macchina che ora stende la pasta, sostituendo il lavoro che un tempo veniva fatto con il mattarello, tutti gli altri passaggi del processo sono eseguiti a mano e secondo la tradizione. Un processo incredibilmente lungo e purtroppo sempre più raro, poiché i Maestri Pasticceri in tutta Italia vanno in pensione e il loro posto è preso dalle macchine. In effetti, oggi esiste solo una scuola di pasticceria in Italia: l’esperienza e il know-how vengono generalmente tramandati da padre a figlio durante il lavoro.
Nel 2007, la Città di Barga ha conferito il suo massimo riconoscimento, il Premio San Cristoforo d’Oro, ai fratelli Lucchesi (articolo qui). Intitolato al patrono di Barga, San Cristoforo, il premio celebra i contributi straordinari alla città e alla sua comunità.
