Back in February of this year (article here) , a slightly misjudged manoeuvre with a reversing car gave the final push to an already damaged and wobbly stone bollard* in Barga Vecchia – gravity then took over.
This morning workmen from the comune undertook a complex operation to restore the centuries old stone back to its original place facing the unofficial cultural centre of Barga Vecchia – the Da Aristo bar in Piazza Salvo Salvi.

Complex, as simply cementing the object back in place was not recommended. Instead corresponding metal rods were drilled and inserted into the bollard and the stone pavement to give a solid structure and ensure that the bollard would be standing for another few hundred years and symmetry is restored to the piazza.
* bollard – originally a nautical term to mean a strong vertical post of timber or iron, fixed to the ground and/or on the deck of a ship, to which the ship’s mooring lines etc are secured.
Now meaning a similar post preventing vehicle access to a pedestrian area, to delineate traffic lanes, or used for security purposes.
