It’s the standard joke that the first thing or apparently sometimes the only thing that the English talk about is the weather but in recent days it really has been the only topic of conversation here in Barga as the weather has been absolutely atrocious with seemingly never ending rain lashing down day and night.
Apart from the risk of landslides and sound of the swollen River Serchio at the bottom of the valley one of the other casualties this week has been one of those natural events which are eagerly look forward to and leave a definite feeling of disappointment if missed.
If the conditions are right and you are in the right place at the right time, it is possible twice a year, on the 11th – 12th November and the 30th – 31st January to see the doppio tramonto – the double sunset viewed from outside the Duomo in Barga Vecchia.
This is when the sun drops down behind the mountains in the distance and then shines through the natural arch of the Monte Forato.
This event generally draws a crowd at the Duomo as they wait for the sun to dip below the horizon, only to re-appear seconds later.
For the last couple of days there have been people waiting to catch a glimpse of the doppio tramonto as the sun edged closer and closer to the hole.
Today was the big day where everything should have lined up perfectly ….. that is, until the weather decided to play a hand in the proceedings -- low clouds and torrential rain completely obscured Monte Forato and the show was cancelled until later on next year in January where once again it will be possible to witness this rare event (maybe)

Il sorgere ed il tramontare del sole, i fenomeni astronomici più prevedibili, sui quali basiamo la nostra percezione dello scorrere dei giorni.
Chi si sofferma a vedere sorgere il Sole? Forse è più frequente che qualcuno si fermi ad osservare il tramonto, specialmente se il disco si cala in mare, quando l’orizzonte è sgombro da nubi o foschie.
Esiste tuttavia un luogo grazie al quale l’apparire del sole al mattino e la sua scomparsa alla sera possono diventare fenomeni eccezionali.
Il luogo è il Monte Forato, sulla Alpi Apuane.
In certi giorni dell’anno il Sole appare una prima volta in un foro che la natura ha “costruito” sulla cima della montagna, poi viene nascosto dall’arco di roccia che sovrasta il foro e quindi sorge una seconda volta, al di sopra dell’arco.
Il foro misura circa 30 metri di diametro attraverso il quale, grazie anche al suo allineamento da NNE a SSO, è possibile scorgere, sia dal versante orientale ma con più facilità da quello occidentale, il transito di corpi celesti: non solo il Sole ma anche la Luna , Venere, le Pleiadi…
Una caratteristica particolare di questo fenomeno è che esistono alcuni siti nelle vicinanze del Monte dai quali il foro sottende un angolo di circa mezzo grado, più o meno quanto appaiono in cielo sia la Luna sia il Sole.
L’osservazione del transito da questi luoghi permette perciò di osservare questi due corpi celesti delle dimensioni pressoché uguali al foro. source – Astrocultura
