Barga becomes an example of artistic and cultural excellence. After an extremely rich summer season, which saw combined art and music in such an exceptional location as Villa Libano, even the autumn reserves great discoveries for the chief town of the high mid valley of the Serchio river. In fact, thanks to the synergy of forces such as the Nuovo Circolo Dei Differenti and the cultural association Venti D’Arte, from the 1st to the 7th of September, Massimo Catalani, a roman artist with an international renown, will be sculpting in the historic town center a block of marble debris, for the project La Casa Dei Pesci (The House of Fishes t.n.). The so named underwater sculpture park, located off the coast of Talamone, is designed to fight the trawling, unfortunately still practiced.
The project, curated by Riccarda Bernacchi, Lucia Morelli and Nicola Salotti, has received major sponsorships from the Lega Ambiente, Greenpeace; the Province of Grosseto and Lucca, the Guidi Museum of Forte dei Marmi, the Town of Barga and the technical sponsorship of some private citizens [oppure privately run firms]. The occasion that brings together art, ethics and the environment calls into play various forms of artistic expressions. In fact Catalani will be sculpting the monument to the abyss in a live performance for a whole week, he will be at the “Stanze della Memoria” Museum (The Rooms of Memory t.n) with a retrospective of paintings and he will present an exhibition of the Roman group of the “Cinquantarti” entitled “Gioco nel Gioco” (Game in the Game t.n.): six artists, not all professionals, who revolve around the maestro (Simona Ballesio, Michiel Blumenthal, Massimo Mei, Giacomo Perversi, Arvedo Arvedi, Mauro Fraticelli) at the Town Gallery in the historic center in Via di Borgo.
Barga diventa un esempio di eccellenza artistica e culturale. Dopo una stagione estiva ricchissima, che ha visto unite arte e musica in una location d’eccezione come Villa Libano, anche l’autunno riserva grandi scoperte per la città della alta media valle del Serchio. Infatti, grazie alla sinergia di forze come il Nuovo Circolo dei Differenti e l’associazione culturale Venti d’Arte, dal 1 al 7 settembre, Massimo Catalani, artista romano di fama internazionale, scolpirà nel centro storico cittadino un blocco di marmo di risulta, destinato alla Casa dei Pesci. Il parco di scultura sottomarina, così nominato, situato nel mare di Talamone è ideato per combattere la pesca a strascico, purtroppo ancora praticata.
Il progetto, curato da Riccarda Bernacchi Lucia Morelli e Nicola Salotti, ha ricevuto importanti patrocini da Lega Ambiente, Greenpeace; Provincie di Grosseto e di Lucca, Museo Guidi di Forte dei Marmi, Comune di Barga e la sponsorizzazione tecnica di alcuni privati. L’occasione che unisce arte, etica ed ambiente mette in gioco varie espressioni artistiche.
Catalani infatti scolpirà il monumento per l’abisso in una performance dal vivo per un’intera settimana, sarà presente al Museo Stanze della Memoria con una sua retrospettiva di opere pittoriche e presenterà una mostra dal titolo Gioco nel Gioco del gruppo romano delle Cinquantarti, sei artisti non tutti professionisti che ruotano intorno al maestro (Simona Ballesio, Michiel Blumenthal, Massimo Mei, Giacomo Perversi, Arvedo Arvedi, Mauro Fraticelli) presso la Galleria Comunale del centro storico in Via di Borgo. – source
Ventidue opere raccontano a Barga la carriera artistica di Massimo Catalani in 25 anni.
I soggetti appartengono al suo e al nostro quotidiano: zucchine, limoni, rose, pesci, pecore, donne e anche architetture della sua Roma, città natale in cui tuttora vive e lavora, ma non solo.
Catalani rappresenta anche gli elementi della natura: la terra, l’aria, l’acqua.
Le nature morte che hanno inaugurato un genere pittorico, secoli or sono, diventano nell’artista un trait d’union tra l’uomo e la natura, nel senso più profondo del termine, definendo il primo come parte di un tutto.
Il risultato estetico è il frutto di una ricerca di equilibrio, di armonia, di bellezza in tutto il cosmo.
David Hume, filosofo scozzeze, alla fine del Settecento scriveva ‘La bellezza delle cose esiste nella mente che le contempla’ ed è questo pensiero che sovviene alla mente dell’osservatore nel vedere i quadri di Massimo, il pensiero che colui che ha dipinto percepisca il bello, la proporzione, la leggerezza e la fluidità.
I colori sono vivi, le tele trattate con abile tecnica pittorica.
Se l’arte contemporanea è un percorso di sperimentalismi difficili da incasellare in movimenti e correnti e spesso le opere sorprendono il pubblico e lo scuotono per la mancanza di canonici criteri estetici o di codici espressivi riconosciuti, Catalani interpreta le istanze del contemporaneo con una centratura propria e un linguaggio tutto suo, immediatamente riconoscibile nel vasto panorama artistico odierno.
Massimo è artista poliedrico come pochi talenti, pittore architetto scultore, ma anche uomo impegnato nel difendere l’ambiente. A Barga, infatti, sarà protagonista unico nella realizzazione di un blocco di marmo di risulta, destinato alla Casa dei Pesci, il parco di scultura sottomarina che sarà situato nel mare di Talamone e ideato per combattere la pesca a strascico illegale, purtroppo ancora praticata.
L’incontro con la sua arte è un’opportunità di crescita e di sviluppo per l’individuo e per la comunità.

Twenty-two works af art will tell in Barga 25 years of artistic career of Massimo Catalani.
The subjects belong to his and to our everyday life: zucchini, lemons, roses, fishes, sheep, women, and even the architectures of Rome, his hometown, where he still lives and works, but not only.
Catalani also represents the elements of the nature: earth, air, water.
The still lifes that have ushered in a genre of painting, centuries ago, in the artist become a linking thread between man and nature, in the deepest meaning of the term, defining the former as the part of a whole.
The aesthetic result is the outcome of a search for balance, harmony and beauty in the whole cosmos. David Hume, a Scottish philosopher at the end of the eighteenth century wrote ‘The Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them’ and it is this thought that occurs to the mind of the observer seeing the paintings of Massimo, the thought that he who had painted could perceive the beauty, the proportion, the lightness and the fluidity.
The colors are alive, and the canvases treated with a skillful painting technique.
If contemporary art is a journey of experimentalisms, difficult to be pigeonholed in movements and currents, and often the art works surprise the audience and shake it for the lack of canonical aesthetic criteria or recognized codes of expression, Catalani interprets the instances of the contemporary with his own centering and with a language entirely of its own, instantly recognizable in the vast art scene today.
Massimo is a versatile artist like few other talents, architect, sculptor, painter, but also a man committed to protect the environment. In Barga, in fact, he will be the protagonist in the creation of a single block of marble debris, for the Casa Dei Pesci (House Of Fishes t.n.), the underwater sculpture park that will be located in the sea of Talamone and designed to combat illegal trawling, unfortunately still practiced.
The encounter with his art is an opportunity for growth and development for the individual and for the community.
