As we come nearer to the end of February it would seem that the ice grip of winter has relaxed slightly. Yes, there was a sharp frost early this morning but today temperatures are expected to rise up to 15 degrees.
Spring is on the way, maybe ?
Birds can be heard singing, insects have started to appear again and a small bat was seen flying around Barga Vecchia this weekend apparently woken up from hibernation (or torpor) by the change in temperatures.
People have started to move around once again as life picks up speed. Now is the time to assess the damage that the sub zero temperatures might have wreaked on the city. There have been many burst water pipes and boiler failures which have kept the plumbers in the area working flat out to repair the damage but this week another less obvious destruction has gradually come to light and once which will take a little longer to resolve.
Its not that we had a huge amount of snow, in effect it was 20- 25 cms, but what was damaging was the extreme cold weather which followed the snowfall, with temperatures way below freezing for a couple of weeks which meant that that snow stayed where it had fallen if it had not been cleared by snow ploughs of by hand. Fine for the roads but not so wonderful above our heads on the roofs of the houses. That 20 -25 cms of frozen solid snow sat there for weeks until it gradually thawed away but in the meantime the weight of all that ice had a negative effect on the classic Tuscan roof tiles that cover most of the house here.
Most of the roofs in Barga are covered in the traditional Cap and Barrel (Coppo su coppo) pattern of terracotta tile. They are not nailed down but loosely laid over each other. The extra weight has meant that on many houses, gravity has played its part and the tiles have slid down.

This morning in Barga Vecchia a tour of the city reveals that at least a dozen roofs now have tiles dangerously peeking over the guttering and if a wind springs up will come crashing down in to the narrow streets below.

These tiles can be fixed fairly easily but there is a another problem which will take a good deal more time and money to sort out. When the renovations were done on the Teatro dei Differenti by law they were not allowed to re roof with new tiles but had to use a percentage of old tiles so that the visual aspect of the city was not drastically altered by a glaring new roof.
Unfortunately those old tiles although visually pleasing and blending in with the other roofs around them have not fared so well in the recent cold spell.
In fact many of them have quite simply disintegrated leaving gaping holes in the roof which will without a doubt mean rain will seep into the dressing rooms of the theatre in the coming months.
In the current economic climate, the last thing the Comune actually needed is more expense on the repairing the theatre which was shut for almost 2 decades only recently while major work was undertaken to bring it up to standard. (the theatre was reopened on 29th November 1998 after being closed for renovations for over 16 years)

Ci avviciniamo alla fine di febbraio e sembra che la morsa dell’inverno ci abbia abbandonato: la mattina continua ad essere molto freddo, ma durante il giorno la temperatura arriva tranquillamente a 15 e più gradi. Sta forse arrivando la primavera?
Ormai si sentono gli uccellini cinguettare e gli insetti hanno ricominciato ad apparire, e addirittura è stato visto un pipistrello svolazzare per Barga Vecchia, finalmente risvegliatosi dal letargo grazie alle temperature più miti.
Le persone hanno ricominciato ad uscire e la vita sta riprendendo velocità.
È quindi tempo di valutare i danni che le rigide temperature delle scorse settimane potrebbero aver arrecato alla cittadina: già sappiamo che diverse tubazioni dell’acqua non hanno retto il gelo e sono esplose, così come qualche caldaia è andata in tilt richiedendo agli idraulici un gran lavoro; ma questa settimana sono venuti alla luce danni meno evidenti e che forse saranno più complessi da risolvere.
Nella zona di Barga non è caduta molta neve – non più di 20 o 25 centimetri – ma quello che è stato veramente dannoso è stato il freddo estremo che è seguito alla nevicata. Le temperature sono rimaste sotto lo zero per un paio di settimane e di conseguenza la neve che non era stata spalata è rimasta a terra e sui tetti. Le strade sono state pulite velocemente, ma non si poteva fare lo stesso per i tetti, così che un strato di diversi centimetri di neve ghiacciata è rimasto per giorni e giorni sopra le nostre teste (e sotto i nostri piedi) finché non si è disciolta.
Nel frattempo, però, il peso di questo manto ghiacciato ha avuto effetti negativi sulle coperture di tegoli, che appesantite, hanno cominciato a scivolare verso l’esterno.
Un giro in Barga Vecchia dimostra che almeno una dozzina di tetti ha i tegoli che sporgono pericolosamente dalle gronde, e solo una raffica di vento potrebbe bastare a farli cadere definitivamente nelle strade sottostanti.
Sono danni che potrebbero essere riparati facilmente, ma c’è un altro problema la cui soluzione richiede una buona dose di tempo e soldi: ci sono infatti leggi che regolano gli interventi di ristrutturazione nei centri storici, prevedendo, tra le altre cose, l’impiego di materiali da costruzione caratteristici dei luoghi.
Il tetto del teatro dei Differenti, ad esempio, fu rinnovato utilizzando tegoli nuovi mescolati a tegoli vecchi così da lasciare immutato l’aspetto architettonico della costruzione come richiesto dai disciplinari.
Anche se belli da vedere, però, questi vecchi tegoli non hanno resistito alle ultime gelate: molti si sono letteralmente sbriciolati lasciando grosse fessure sul tetto, il che significa che alle prossime piogge l’acqua si infiltrerà nella struttura.
In questo momento di difficoltà economica l’ultima cosa di cui il comune aveva bisogno erano altre spese per riparare un teatro che è stato chiuso per quasi venti anni e solo recentemente era stato ristrutturato perché fosse a norma.
