Okpere (not his real name) left his native Nigeria in 2008 passing through Libya before boarding a boat for the incredibly dangerous crossing to the island of Lampedusa. That particular sea passage having already cost the lives of many hundreds, maybe even thousands of illegal immigrants hoping to escape the poverty of Africa by getting a foothold on the promised land of mainland Europe. From there he gradually made his way up through Italy and today he can now be found in the area around Barga.
Okpere through none of his own fault finds himself in a “Catch-22” situation being unable to return to his country of origin or continue on his journey. He was told that once he arrived in Italy he would find work and be able to travel further up north to his final destination, with some of his countrymen who have made a life for themselves in Norway. Instead he found an Italy suffering from an economic crisis with work at a premium and his position as an illegal immigrant making it almost impossible for him to find solid work.
Although trained as a welder in his native Nigeria, he is now reduced to begging to survive. In the sub zero temperatures of the Barga this morning he stands outside the local supermarket begging for money or food. He has now worked out a weekly system so that each Saturday for the past couple of weeks he stands outside the supermarket here in Barga. Each Thursday he can be found in Castelnuovo, each Wednesday at Gallicano, on Mondays , Borgo a Mozzano, Tuesday’s he is begging in Bagni di Lucca and Fridays right up in Garfagnana in Piazza Serchio. As each week passes his self esteem gradually lowers, his morale drops and he starts to think of just what price he is paying for his chance of a better life.
The chances of a young Nigerian without documents getting through the next few weeks of harsh economic and weather conditions without being deported back to his home country, it has to be said, are pretty slim.
Italy, Nigeria and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) have reached a two-year security agreement in a bid to fight human trafficking and illegal immigration. The agreement follows an official visit by the Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini, to the African nation for official talks with Nigerian leaders on issues including immigration.
Head of the Italian police, Antonio Manganelli, announced details of the agreement on Tuesday.
“The agreement is intended to fight illegal immigration and human trafficking, by expanding international cooperation,” Manganelli said.
Manganelli, who was in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Monday to sign the agreement, said that joint Nigerian-Italian police would conduct patrols for 12 months at various strategic points such as country borders, international airports, ports, and urban areas.
Italy’s central office for immigration and border police will also organise training courses for Nigerian police.
The precise number of illegal Nigerian immigrants in Italy is unknown. However, Nigerians make up about 1.2 percent of the total number of legal immigrants in Italy, or 40,000 inhabitants. Their numbers lag far behind other African countries like Morocco (365,000), Tunisia (93,000), Egypt (69,000) and Senegal (62,000), according to figures compiled by Catholic charities Caritas and Fondazione Migrantes in their latest report. – source
Thanks, Keane, for obliging us to imagine life as people like Okpere must live it. When we render such people invisible — or worse, demonize them, as so many Europeans and Americans do — we surrender our own humanity in denying theirs.

Caro Keane, condivido in pieno il tuo tentativo di mettere in luce un problema che spesso cerchiamo di non far emergere nelle nostre coscienze. Tanto per tornare sul tema dell’Argentina vista come “terzo mondo” voglio portare un esempio che potrebbe essere illuminante. Buenos Aires, Sindaco Maurizio Macri (sangue italiano, come si capisce), problema: dopo l’apertura dei confini del Mercosur la città viene invasa da peruviani, boliviani, paraguagi, etc, che cercano qui non una vita migliore ma, piuttosto, la sopravvivenza ( come gli africani da noi )e, naturalmente, si comportano come da noi gli africani. Il problema è grosso ed incontrollato. L’aspetto peggiore è il vedere questa gente che va a cercare il cibo tra i sacchi dell’immondizia e, in poco tempo, la città diventa invivibile e pericolosa ( tanto per farla breve ). Le tensioni sociali sono al culmine e la povertà seguita al crollo finaziario del 2001 non aiuta. Quale è l’idea geniale del Sindaco? Semplice, “volete frugare tra i sacchi dell’immondizia? Fatelo in modo utile.” Il comune si attrezza ed ” assume ” questa gente per fare la raccolta differenziata di carta, vetro e plastica. In breve un servizio che nessuno avrebbe mai svolto diventa una forma di integrazione e di utilità per la città. Ovvio che ho semplificato e che l’idea di Macri non è stato che un tentativo parziale per un problema che, comunque, persiste ma, pensando a noi mi chiedo: se il Sindaco di Vagli ( tanto per fare un esempio ) invece di fare un monumento alla stupidità avesse speso quei soldi per far pulire le strade o, comunque, per far fare qualche lavoro utile inviso ai concittadini questo immigrato, non avrebbe fatto qualcosa di più meritorio agli occhi dei suoi elettori? Questa, ovviamente, è solo la prima idea che mi viene in mente ma, senza neppure tanta fantasia, credo che molte potrebbero essere le cose che si potrebbero inventare senza nessuno sforzo. Peraltro dobbiamo prendere atto ( e mi stupisce che coloro che andavano a giro con il libretto rosso di Mao Tse Tung non lo ricordino ) che è inevitabile che ” le campagne assedino le città “. Allora non rimane altro che cercare il metodo migliore per una integrazione ricordando che ciò che loro sono oggi noi lo fummo in passato.
