Designed by So Kanno and Takahiro Yamaguchi, the “Senseless Drawing Robot” (that’s them calling it senseless, not me) combines random programming with even more random motion to spray paint randomness along whatever wall you park it next to. One thing’s for sure: humans aren’t allowed to be doing this. For such a random mechanism, those patterns appear to have quite a bit of artistry attached to them, but I’m probably just projecting or something.
If you’re wondering how the actual bot mechanism works, it’s made up of a single arm with a rotary encoder which is hooked up to the fulcrum of the pendulum. As it is swung from side to side, the laws of physics kick in and give it erratic pen strokes which are powered by inertia. Once it is swinging back and forth successfully, there are quick releases of paint from the spray can that this arm clutches.
The usual idea in abstract work is to create feeling that is completely un-biased by familiar images, and although the bot most likely doesn’t feel any emotions, it can certainly execute the un-biased part of abstracting (seeing as it has no mind).
According to their site : SENSELESS DRAWING BOT is a self-generated drawing machine that using chaotic movement of double pendulum and drawing abstract line dynamically in realtime.
The modified electric skateboard with double pendulum detecting the direction of the movement of pendulum by rotary encoder on the fulcrum of it and amplify the wobble by moving right and left. If it passes over the threshold, it draws on the wall in a twinkling. So the principle of operation is quite simple.
This work simulates a act of graffiti by extracting the dynamism of the process of drawing by eliminating the human body and assertion from doodle action called “graffiti” that recognized as a expression method.
We exploring for “what is the essence of graffiti” by presenting the elements like extemporaneousness, symbol characteristic and vandalism and trying to connect a new interpretation.
