It was only last week that the air in Barga was rent by the sound of car horns as jubilant Inter Milan fans took to their cars as they formed a convoy of flag waving supporters which toured the area for an hour or so informing the rest of the population that their team had won their 5th consecutive Serie A title. Tonight it happened again only this time with added fireworks, more bells and whistles, many more cars and yet more supporters as Inter won the Champions League for the first time in 45 years. In addition to this historic achievement, Inter has completed the treble – something no other Italian team has managed to do.
In what may prove to be the ultimate farewell present from coach Jose Mourinho, Inter Milan have claimed their first UEFA Champions League title in 45 years with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in Madrid courtesy of a superb brace from man-of-the-match Diego Milito.
The Argentinian striker scored a goal on either side of half-time at the Santiago Bernabeu to cement his place in the folklore of the tournament, clinching a historic treble for the Italian club, who had already claimed the Serie A and Coppa Italia in the preceding weeks.
Despite falling well behind their German opponents in terms of possession, Inter always looked comfortable playing their natural counter-attacking game and rarely looked as though they could be beaten. This triumph is the crowning glory of the many achievements of Mourinho, who now stands unchallenged as the world’s best manager.
