It has to be said that it was not really the best of starts for the Barga Celtic Supporters Club at their inaugural meeting in their new headquarters at Paolo Gas’ bar on the Fosso.
The faithful had gathered this afternoon in front of a new large screen and Dolby sound to actively participate in the first derby of the season for the Scottish Premier League between the historic rivals from Glasgow – Celtic and Rangers.
And actively participate they did. The sound inside the bar reaching incredible levels with a wonderful mixture of Italian and Scottish accents roaring out their approval and for a good part of the match, outright disapproval over the full 90 minutes.
Included in that mix was the voice of Wayne Calcutt, who thanks to the magic of digital conversation was able to join the other supporters in Paolo’s bar…. although nobody was left in any doubt as to the “neutrality” of the bar.
I am visiting Barga on Saturday for a holiday. I am from Scotland and know there is quite a large Scottish influence in Barga. When I will be there, there is a huge Celtic football match I really don’t want to miss. I was wondering if there will be any Celtic or neutral bars showing the Celtic v Rangers match on Sunday the 4th Sept? – Wayne Calcutt

Two goals from Kenny Miller slashed Celtic’s lead at the summit of the Scottish Premier League to a single point as Rangers claimed victory in the first Old Firm derby of the season.
The striker returned to haunt his former club once again with two early goals to put the Scottish champions in the driving seat at Ibrox.
Aiden McGeady did manage to pull a goal back from the penalty spot but his strike was not enough to prevent Tony Mowbray’s first derby as Celtic manager ending in defeat.

Barga Celtic Supporters Club – facebook can be found hereIl nostro club ufficialmente affiliato al Celtic Supporters Association, vuole essere un forte punto di riferimento per ogni tifoso e simpatizzante della cattolicissima squadra calcistica di Glasgow, una passione per i colori bianco-verdi a strisce orizzontali importata dai barghigiani che in un passato difficile emigrarono numerosi in Scozia e che, uniti ai loro discendenti, tornano puntuali ogni anno a visitare la loro terra d’origine. Il perché di questo binomio, che ad altri potrebbe apparire insolito e bizzarro, è invece molto semplice e scontato, e se ne sta scritto all’interno di un libro tra le cui pagine il destino a volte si diverte ad incrociare gli eventi, anche a distanze temporali lontane fra di loro: questa storia di emigrazione barghigiana non poteva infatti non trovare naturali spunti di amore verso il prestigioso Celtic Football Club, fondato nel 1888 da padre Walfrid per raccogliere fondi di sostentamento per i poverissimi quartieri cattolici abitati dagli emigranti irlandesi.
Il Barga Celtic Supporters Club è così una delle tante espressioni di una realtà territoriale molto particolare, frutto di un legame oramai indissolubile, quello tra Barga e la Scozia, che ha avuto origini antiche e che si è rafforzato con il tempo. Un meraviglioso connubio di spiccata umanità che non si è sviluppato in un’unica direzione celebrativa, ma che riesce ad unire il senso di riconoscenza della città di Barga verso questa nazione assieme alla stima che le istituzioni scozzesi nutrono verso la comunità barghigiana, un ringraziamento al contributo che i nostri cittadini hanno restituito alla Scozia.
Non è quindi un caso che sotto i nostri secolari castagni dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano viva un ulteriore senso di appartenenza ad un mondo antico, palpitante di suggestioni derivate dai colori dei kilt e dalle melodie di guerra che le cornamuse hanno sovente lanciato contro l’invasiva Inghilterra. Non è assolutamente difficile muoversi in questo retroterra e trovarsi fisiologicamente catapultati nella nostra epoca moderna a commuoverci per un gol segnato all’elite protestante e filo-britannica dei Rangers.
Se vuoi vivere con noi questa passione le porte sono aperte; la nostra missione sarà quella di trovare un punto di riferimento dove poter assistere alle partite del Celtic e socializzare attorno ad un buon boccale di birra, organizzare trasferte a Glasgow per “vivere” le partite al mitico “Celtic Park” o come lo chiamano i Bhoys “Paradise”, creare eventi che possano sfociare in autentiche missioni di solidarietà, proprio per raccogliere in tutta la sua essenza il vero spirito del fantastico mondo del Celtic Football Club.
