The grape harvest in 2007 was good as far as quality of the grapes but low on quantity. The mild winter with the lack of snow and low rain fall during spring that year was probably the main reason behind the smaller harvest.
Last year, some growers had a bad year as well due to a virus and fungus which destroying a high percentage of their grapes.
So there was a good deal of trepidation amongst the wine producers in the area for the outcome of the vendemmia this year as the local saying goes ” there are not two without three”.
Some people picked their grapes last weekend but most this and by all accounts its ” third time lucky” as the quantity and more importantly the quality seems to be very high this year.
We could well be in for one of the better years in wine production in this area. The very dry conditions for the last three months and then rainfall two weeks ago at just the right time has probably contributed to making with vendemmia 2009 one to remember.
