INTERNATIONAL ARRANGING AND COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR JAZZ ORCHESTRA – 2009 EDITION

Regulations:
art. 1 The competition is divided into 4 sections:
SECTION A – ARRANGING (Tom Harrell, soloist)
SECTION B – ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS
SECTION C – SELECTED PIECES OF MUSIC
SECTION D – PERFORMANCE
art. 2.1 The competition is open to Italian and foreign musicians.
art. 2.2 Members of the Barga Jazz 2009 Orchestra are excluded.
art. 2.3 Winners of past editions may compete.
art. 3.1 Section A of the 2009 edition is dedicated to Tom Harrell.
art. 3.2 The arrangements must be of music by Tom Harrell.
art. 4.1 Both Section A arrangements and Sections B and C compositions must be written for the following orchestral formation:
1° sax alto/ clarinet
2° sax alto
1° sax tenor / soprano
2° sax tenor
sax baritone / bass clarinet
1° trumpet
2° trumpet / flugelhorn
3° trumpet
4° trumpet / flugelhorn
1° trombone
2° trombone
3° trombone
bass trombone
piano, guitar, double bass, drums, vibraphone.
art. 4.2 Only for Section A: Tom Harrell will play the selected arrangements as soloist within the orchestral formation of the BJ Orchestra.
art. 4.3 Scores for any kind of orchestral formation other than that indicated in these regulations will not be accepted.
art. 5.1 To be admitted to Section C 2009, applications should be submitted to the Stage of Arrangin an Composition for Jazz Orchestra. The Stage will take place in Barga from 9th to13th of August.
art. 5.2 Pieces written by pupils will be analysed, discussed and corrected by Maestro Bruno Tommaso.
art. 5.3 A specially constituted commission will select the pieces to be admitted to the final stage of the competition.
art. 6.1 Section D (performance) is reserved to groups of 3 to 7 performers.
art. 6.2 The groups selected must give a public performance of not less than 20 minutes in duration.
art. 6.3 During the course of Section D the “Premio LUCA FLORES” will be awarded to a member of one of the groups competing who is deemed to be of particular worth.
art. 7.1 In order to participate in the INTERNATIONAL ARRANGING AND COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR JAZZ ORCHESTRA – 2009 EDITION you must send the following documents by registered post with return receipt to the Secretary’s Office, c/o COMUNE DI BARGA, VIA DI MEZZO 45, 55051 BARGA (LU), ITALY:
– Completed application, together with dates of birth, address and telephone number.
– Signed declaration of acceptance of the rules of the competition.
art. 7.2 For Sections A and B also include the following: TWO COPIES of the score, signed by the contestant, and CLEARLY transcribed copies of the parts for all instruments, IN DUPLICATE COPY.
art. 7.3 For Section D include the following:
– A recording of the group (CD or Cassette) containing at least two pieces of not less than six minutes duration each.
– Curriculum of the group and its members.
– Name and dates of birth of group members together with ENPALS registration number.
– Those not registered with ENPALS should also send photocopy of their identity document.
– Address and telephone number of the person responsible.
art. 7.4 EXPIRY DATES (dates by which application and documents must reach the Comune of Barga):
– Sections A, B and D: 27th of July 2009
art. 8 The scores and recordings are not returnable.
art. 9.1 A commission nominated by the artistic director will select the pieces (Sections A end B) and groups (Section D) to be admitted to the final stage of the competition.
art. 9.2 The final decision will be communicated within the first week in August.
art. 9.3 An expense voucher will be given to the composers and arrangers of the pieces selected for Sections A/B/C to cover travel and lodging expenses.
art. 9.4 Pieces participating in Sections A/B/C will be played in public performances at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of August 2009.
art. 9.5 The performance for Section D will take place in Barga at “Istituto Superiore di Istruzione”; between the 24th and the 25th of August. The competitors will be informed with due notice.
art. 9.6 Groups must confirm their participation by telegram within 7 days of being notified of their selection.
art. 9.7 An expense voucher of the value of euro 50,00 net will be available to every member of the group (Section D).
art. 10 An international jury composed of musicians and journalists specialised in Jazz will assess the works in competition and assign the prizes.
art. 11.1 The following cash prizes (before tax) will be awarded:
– Section A 1st placed: € 1.500,00;
– Section B 1st placed: € 1.000,00
– Section C 1st placed: € 500,00
– Section D 1st placed: € 800,00
– “Premio LUCA FLORES” € 500,00
art. 11.2 The prize giving will take place on the final evening of the event, in Barga, on the 29th of August. The jury, whose decision is final, reserves the right to recommend other meritorious pieces and to withhold one or more prizes.
art. 12 The event may be recorded in whole or in part for radio and tele-visual promotional purposes and the competitors will have no claim for compensation, other than that provided for by copyright legislation.

Regolamento
art.1 Il concorso BARGA JAZZ si divide in 4 sezioni:
SEZIONE A – ARRANGIAMENTO (solista Tom Harrell)
SEZIONE B – COMPOSIZIONI ORIGINALI
SEZIONE C – BRANI A LIBERA SCELTA
SEZIONE D – ESECUZIONE
art.2.1 Il concorso è aperto a musicisti italiani e stranieri.
2.2 sono esclusi i componenti della BargaJazz Orchestra 2009.
2.3 Sono ammessi a concorrere anche i vincitori delle passate edizioni.
art.3.1 Per l’edizione 2009 la sezione A è dedicata a Tom Harrell.
3.2 Gli arrangiamenti dovranno essere su musiche di Tom Harrell
art.4.1 Sia gli arrangiamenti della sez. A che le composizioni della sez. B e C dovranno essere orchestrate per il seguente organico:
1° sax alto/clarinetto
2° sax alto
1° sax tenore/soprano
2° sax tenore
sax baritono/cl.basso
1° tromba
2° tromba/flicorno
3° tromba
4° tromba/flicorno
1° trombone
2° trombone
3° trombone
trombone basso
pianoforte, chitarra, contrabbasso, batteria, vibrafono.
4.2 Esclusivamente per la sezione A, Tom Harrell eseguirà con l’orchestra gli arrangiamenti selezionati come solista in aggiunta all’organico suddetto.
4.3 Non verranno accettate partiture con organico diverso da quello indicato nel presente regolamento.
art.5.1 Per accedere alla sezione “C” 2009 occorre inviare domanda di iscrizione allo Stage di Arrangiamento e Composizione per Orchestra Jazz. Lo stage si svolgerà a Barga dal 9 al 13 agosto.
5.2 I brani prodotti dagli allievi saranno analizzati, discussi e perfezionati sotto la guida del M° Bruno Tommaso.
5.3 Una commissione appositamente costituita selezionerà i brani da inserire nella fase conclusiva del concorso.
art.6.1 La sezione D (esecuzione), è riservata a gruppi da 3 a 7 elementi.
6.2 I gruppi selezionati dovranno eseguire pubblicamente un programma della durata minima di 20 minuti.
6.3 Nell’ambito della sezione D verrà assegnato il “Premio LUCA FLORES” a un componente dei gruppi in gara ritenuto particolarmente meritevole.
art.7.1 Per partecipare al CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE DI ARRANGIAMENTO E COMPOSIZIONE DI BARGA JAZZ occorre inviare mediante raccomandata A/R indirizzata alla segreteria del concorso c/o
COMUNE DI BARGA, VIA DI MEZZO 45, BARGA (LU), ITALIA, la seguente documentazione:
– Domanda di partecipazione contenente i dati anagrafici, l’indirizzo e il numero di telefono.
– Dichiarazione di accettazione delle regole del concorso.
7.2 Per la sez. A e B, unire alla domanda:
DUE COPIE della partitura, firmata dal concorrente, e le parti di tutti gli strumenti SCRITTE CHIARAMENTE e in DUPLICE COPIA.
7.3 Per la sez. D, unire alla domanda:
– Una registrazione del gruppo (CD o cassetta) contenente almeno 2 brani della durata minima di almeno 6 minuti ciascuno.
– Curriculum del gruppo e dei suoi componenti.
– Nome e dati anagrafici dei componenti del gruppo e il numero di iscrizione all’ENPALS.
– Coloro che non sono iscritti all’ENPALS dovranno allegare anche una fotocopia della carta d’identità.
– Indirizzo, numero telefonico ed indirizzo email del responsabile.
7.4 TERMINI DI SCADENZA (data entro la quale devono pervenire le domande e il materiale al Comune di Barga):
– SEZ. A, B e D: 27 LUGLIO 2009
art.8 Le partiture e le registrazioni non verranno restituite.
art.9.1 Una commissione nominata dal direttore artistico selezionerà i brani (sez.A e B) e i gruppi (sez.D) che accederanno alla fase finale del concorso.
9.2 Le decisioni della commissione verranno comunicate entro la prima settimana di Agosto.
9.3 Gli autori o arrangiatori dei brani selezionati nelle sezioni A/B/C avranno un gettone di presenza per ammortizzare le spese di viaggio e soggiorno.
9.4 Per le sez. A/B/C l’esecuzione dei brani in concorso avverrà pubblicamente presso il Teatro dei Differenti di Barga nei giorni 27,28,29 agosto 2009
9.5 Per la sezione D l’esecuzione avverrà a BARGA presso i giardini dell’Istituto Superiore di Istruzione il 24 e il 25 agosto. I concorrenti verranno informati con il dovuto anticipo.
9.6 I gruppi selezionati dovranno confermare mediante telegramma la loro partecipazione entro 7 giorni dalla comunicazione della avvenuta selezione.
9.7 Verrà accordato un gettone di presenza di € 50,00 netti per ogni elemento dei gruppi (sez. D).
art.10 Una giuria internazionale formata da musicisti e giornalisti specializzati in musica jazz valuterà i lavori in concorso e assegnerà i premi.
art.11.1 verranno messi a disposizione i seguenti premi in denaro (al lordo delle ritenute di legge):
– Sezione A 1° classificato: € 1.500,00
– Sezione B 1° classificato: € 1.000,00
– Sezione C 1° classificato: € 500,00
– Sezione D 1° classificato: € 800,00
– Premio “LUCA FLORES”: € 500,00
11.2 La premiazione avverrà in occasione della serata conclusiva della manifestazione che si terrà a Barga il 29 AGOSTO 2009. La giuria, il cui giudizio è insindacabile, si riserva di segnalare con menzione altri brani meritevoli o di non assegnare uno o più premi.
art. 12 La manifestazione potrà essere ripresa in tutto o in parte per registrazioni radiotelevisive a scopo promozionale senza che i concorrenti abbiano nulla a pretendere, salvo quanto previsto dalla legge sulla tutela del diritto d’autore.
