The protests that have been gathering pace across Italy for the so called “Gelmini reforms” which sparked off school occupations and marching in the streets earlier on this month (articles here) moved into the next stage where the politicians get to stand up and have their say
There had already been a public meeting held in Barga at the end of last month (article here) which showed a united front with students, teachers and the presence of two assessori provinciali Simonetti and Regoli, the President of the Comunità montana Media Valle Bonini, assessori comunali Renzo Pia (istruzione) and Nicola Boggi (politiche giovanili) and the Head of the occupied school, Giovanna Mannelli.

This week the Partito Democratico political party upped the stakes and brought some big guns to the Teatro dei Differenti for another public meeting on the subject of the reforms.
On stage were, Gianfranco Simoncini – Assessore Regionale alla Pubblica istruzione, Senatore Andrea Marcucci, Ardelio Pellegrinotti and Marco Remaschi, both Consiglieri Regionali and Umberto Sereni the Mayor of Barga. Also present in the Teatro were assessori Pia , Boggi, Onesti; il consigliere Salotti; il presidente della comunità montana Bonini; Arturo Nardini e Mauro Campani.
If not defeated, the Gelmini reforms will mean the sacking of 80,000 teachers and 43,000 non-teaching staff such as secretaries and technicians.
