INTERNATIONAL ARRANGING AND COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR JAZZ ORCHESTRA - 2008 EDITION

Regulations:

art 1 The competition is divided into 4 sections:
SECTION A - ARRANGING (David Liebman, soloist)
SECTION B - ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS
SECTION C - SELECTED PIECES OF MUSIC
SECTION D - PERFORMANCE
art 2.1 The competition is open to Italian and foreign musicians.
2.2 Members of the Barga Jazz 2008 orchestra are excluded.
2.3 Winners of past editions may compete.
art. 3.1 Section A of the 2008 edition is dedicated to David Liebman.
3.2 The arrangements must be of music by David Liebman.
art 4.1 Both Sec. A arrangements and Sec. B and C compositions must be written for the following orchestral formation:
1° sax alto/ clarinet
2° sax alto
1° sax tenor / soprano
2° sax tenor
sax baritone / bass clarinet
1° trumpet
2° trumpet / flugelhorn
3° trumpet
4° trumpet / flugelhorn
1° trombone
2° trombone
3° trombone
bass trombone
piano, guitar, double bass, drums, vibraphone.
4.2 Only for section. A: David Liebman will play the selected arrangements as soloist within the orchestral formation of the BJ Orchestra.
4.3 Scores for any kind of orchestral formation other than that indicated in these regulations will not be accepted.
art 5.1 To be admitted to Section C 2008, application should be made to the XXXVIII Seminary of Siena, using the special form, by the 30th of June 2008. For further information apply to the Secretary’s Office of Siena Jazz, Fortezza Medicea 10, 53100, Siena (tel. +39 0577 271401) www.sienajazz.it.
5.2 Pieces written by pupils admitted to the 2nd course will be analysed, discussed and corrected by Maestro Giancarlo Gazzani.
5.3 A specially constituted commission will select the pieces to be admitted to the final stage of the competition.
art 6.1 Section D (performance) is reserved to groups of 3 to 7 performers.
6.2 The groups selected must give a public performance of not less than 20 minutes duration.
6.3 During the course of Section D the “Premio LUCA FLORES” will be awarded to a member of one of the groups competing who is deemed of particular worth.
art 7.1 To participate in the INTERNATIONAL ARRANGING AND COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR JAZZ ORCHESTRA - 2008 EDITION you must send the following documents by registered post with return receipt to the Secretary’s Office, c/o COMUNE DI BARGA, VIA DI MEZZO 45, 55051 BARGA (LU), ITALY:
- Completed application, together with dates of birth, address and telephone number.
- Signed declaration of acceptance of the rules of the competition.
7.2 For Sections A and B also include the following:
TWO COPIES of the score, signed by the contestant, and CLEARLY transcribed copies of the parts for all instruments, IN DUPLICATE COPY.
7.3 For Section D include the following:
- A recording of the group (CD or Cassette) containing at least two pieces of not less than six minutes duration each.
- Curriculum of the group and its members.
- Name and dates of birth of group members together with ENPALS registration number.
- Those not registered with ENPALS should also send photocopy of their identity document.
- Address and telephone number of the person responsible.
7.4 EXPIRY DATES (dates by which application and documents must reach the Comune of Barga):
- SECTION A, B and D: 25th of July 2008
art 8 The scores and recordings are not returnable.
art 9.1 A commission nominated by the artistic director will select the pieces (Sections A end B) and groups (Section D) to be admitted to the final stage of the competition.
9.2 The final decision will be communicated within the first week in August.
9.3 An expense voucher will be given to the composers and arrangers of the pieces selected for sections A/B/C to cover travel and lodging expenses.
9.4 Pieces participating in Sections. A/B/C will be played in public performances at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of August 2008.
9.5 The performance for Section D will take place in Barga at “Istituto Superiore di Istruzione”; between the 25th and the 26th of August. The competitors will be informed with due notice.
9.6 Groups must confirm their participation by telegram within 7 days of being notified of their selection.
9.7 An expense voucher of the value of euro 50,00 net will be available to every member of the group (Sec. D).
art 10 An international jury composed of musicians and journalists specialised in Jazz will assess the works in competition and assign the prizes.
art 11.1 The following cash prizes (before tax) will be awarded:
- Section A 1st placed: € 1.200,00;
- Section B 1st placed: € 750,00
- Section C 1st placed: € 400,00
- Section D 1st placed: € 600,00
- “Premio LUCA FLORES” € 400,00
11.2 The prize giving will take place on the final evening of the event, in Barga, on the 30th of August. The jury, whose decision is final, reserves the right to recommend other meritorious pieces and to withhold one or more prizes.
art 12 The event may be recorded in whole or in part for radio and tele-visual promotional purposes and the competitors will have no claim for compensation, other than that provided for by copyright legislation.
