This course, aimed at advanced level jazz students, will be given by Maestro Bruno Tommaso in collaboration with the BargaJazz Orchestra. The aspects of the course dedicated to theory will involve analysis of score, movement and mannerism, and planning techniques. The practical side will take place together with the orchestra and envisages performance of pieces drawn from the established BargaJazz Orchesta repertoire (largely contained in the “Sound Score” cd, together with the relevant scores). On the evening of the 13rd August there will be a concert during which the participants will conduct in turn.

JAZZ COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION SEMINAR 28-30 AUGUST 2008

Number of participants admitted: minimum 8 - maximum 20
Jazz composition and improvisation seminar for all instruments. The aim is to develop the principal themes regarding composition and arrangement with particular attention given to improvisational techniques. The seminar will take place during the mornings of the 28th, 29th and 30th August at the BargaJazz Club.

In order to participate in the Masterclasses the following must be submitted by the 25th of July 2008:

- past studies and artistic experiences

E’ uscito il bando per partecipare al ventunesimo concorso internazionale di BargaJazz.

Ospite d’onore sarà David Liebman, uno dei più importanti saxofonisti contemporanei, sulla scena del grande jazz dall’inizio degli anni ‘70.

Liebman suonerà con la BargaJazz Orchestra composizioni e arrangiamenti scritti dai concorrenti appositamente, mentre il 27 di agosto presenterà si esibirà con un quartetto composto da ottimi musicisti italiani: Alessandro Fabbri alla batteria, Alessandro Galati al pianoforte e Ares Tavolazzi al contrabbasso.

Come ogni anno il concorso si articola in diverse sezioni dedicate rispettivamente:
(A) all’arrangiamento
(B) alle composizioni originali
(C) ai compositori emergenti (in collaborazione con i seminari di Siena Jazz)
(D) ai gruppi emergenti.

Le sezioni ABC si terranno a fine agosto nel corso di tre serate al Teatro dei Differenti di Barga. La sezione dei gruppi emergenti si terrà presso i giardini dell’Istituto Superiore di Istruzione di Barga. Nell’ambito della sezione D verrà assegnato al miglior solista emergente il premio “Luca Flores”.

Oltre al concorso che si svolgerà quest’anno nella settimana dal 28 al 30 Agosto, il BargaJazz_Festival_2008 prevede numerosi appuntamenti tra giugno a novembre: I concerti itineranti nei vari comuni tramite l’ormai tradizionale “Girando alla Tonda/Turn Around” viaggio musicale alla scoperta della Garfagnana e della Provincia di Lucca, un invito a scoprire i luoghi di particolare interesse naturalistico e storico culturale tramite l’abbinamento a un concerto di qualità.

I Master Class, BargaJazz organizza quest’anno due corsi di alto perfezionamento: David Liebman Workshop, che si svolgerà tra il 28 e il 30 agosto ed il corso di direzione d’orchestra Jazz tenuto da Bruno Tommaso che si svolgerà dal 9 al 13 agosto.

Barga IN Jazz. (La Festa del Jazz), Domenica 24 Agosto il centro storico di Barga sarà invaso per tutto il giorno da oltre dieci gruppi di Jazz.

The 10 days long Barga Jazz Jazz Festival 2007 came to its conclusion this evening with the Grand Finale concert at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga Vecchia.

This year the Festival was organised around the Jazz composer and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler.

A lecture and debate on the theme “Big band e Orchestre Jazz In Europe” this afternoon at the Barga Jazz Club as part of the final day of Barga Jazz Festival 2007.

The presentation was by the Direttore Centro Studi Arrigo Polillo from Siena, the music journalist Francesco Martinelli (his site is here)

Using video and audio he mapped out the rise of European Jazz from the between the two wars with what was probably the first real “home grown” jazz of the Hot Club of France led by Django Reinhardt.

In 1934, Louis Vola formed the “Quintette du Hot Club de France” with Reinhardt, violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt’s brother Joseph and Roger Chaput on guitar, and himself on bass. The concept of “lead guitar” (Django) and backing “rhythm guitar” (Joseph Reinhardt/Roger Chaput or Pierre Ferret) was born with that band.

They also used their guitars for percussive sounds, as they had no true percussion section. The Quintet of the Hot Club of France was one of the few well-known jazz bands to have no drums or percussion section.
