La 16ma edizione di Barga Jazz sarà interamente dedicata alla carriera e alle composizioni di una delle figure più importanti del jazz contemporaneo, il sassofonista e compositore Lee Konitz.
Konitz è stato tra i pochissimi altisti della sua generazione a trovare uno stile alternativo al modello dominante di Charlie Parker: un timbro quasi classico, con poco vibrato, un senso dello swing sottile ma intenso e una improvvisazione melodica con lunghe linee attente alle implicazioni armoniche sono i suoi segni caratteristici che ne hanno fatto la maggiore influenza della scuola “cool”.
Dopo la storica collaborazione con Miles Davis in Birth of the Cool ha a più riprese fatto parte dei gruppi di Lennie Tristano con Warne Marsh. Konitz è anche un compositore originale, oltre che uno straordinario improvvisatore, e già nel 1958 i suoi brani sono state raccolti in volume dal chitarrista Bill Bauer. Dalla fine degli anni ’60 passa molto tempo in Europa, guidando proprie formazioni o prendendo parte a progetti insieme a musicisti del calibro di Bill Evans, Martial Solal, Michel Petrucciani, Red Mitchell, Paul Bley, Harold Danko tra gli altri: la sua presenza ha dato un decisivo contributo all’innalzamento qualitativo del jazz europeo. A Roma incise uno storico Lp con Enrico Rava e Franco D’Andrea (Stereokonitz, RCA) e ha poi suonato anche con Enrico Pieranunzi e Pietro Tonolo: la sua presenza a Barga appare quindi come la logica conclusione di un percorso che ha visto tutti questi musicisti esibirsi al Festival.

Konitz sarà presente all’intero concorso aprendolo con il suo gruppo italiano e poi come ospite della Barga Jazz Big Band. L’orchestra nell’ambito della sezione A del concorso eseguirà quindi nuovi arrangiamenti di temi del sassofonista di Chicago o di standard di cui lo stesso Konitz ha dato interpretazioni che hanno influenzato la storia successiva del jazz.

Regolamento

art.1 Il concorso BARGA JAZZ si divide in 4 sezioni:
SEZIONE A - ARRANGIAMENTO solista Lee Konitz
SEZIONE B - COMPOSIZIONI ORIGINALI
SEZIONE C - BRANI A LIBERA SCELTA
SEZIONE D - ESECUZIONE

art.2. Il concorso è aperto a musicisti italiani e stranieri.
2.1 sono esclusi i componenti dell'orchestra Barga Jazz 2003
2.2 Sono ammessi a concorrere anche i vincitori delle passate edizioni.

art.3 Per l'edizione 2003 la sezione A è dedicata a "Lee Konitz"
3.1 Gli arrangiamenti dovranno essere su musiche di Lee Konitz o su di uno dei seguenti standards: Stella by Starlight, Cherokee, Nefertiti, Body and Soul, How Dep is the Ocean, Every Time we say goodbye

art.4 Sia gli arrangiamenti della sez.A che le composizioni della sez.B dovranno essere orchestrate per il seguente organico:
1° sax alto
2° sax alto/clarinetto
1° sax tenore/soprano
2° sax tenore
sax baritono/cl.basso
1° tromba
2° tromba/flicorno
3° tromba
4° tromba/flicorno
1° trombone
2° trombone
3° trombone
trombone basso
pianoforte, chitarra, contrabbasso, batteria, vibrafono
4.1 Non verranno accettate partiture con organico diverso da quello indicato nel presente regolamento.

art.5 Per accedere alla sezione "C" 2002 occorre inviare domanda di iscrizione al XXIX Seminario di Siena utilizzando l'apposita scheda entro il 30 giugno 2003.

5.1 I brani prodotti dagli allievi ammessi al 2° corso saranno analizzati, discussi e perfezionati sotto la guida de M° Giancarlo Gazzani.
5.2 Una commissione appositamente costituita selezionerà i brani da inserire nella fase conclusiva del concorso.

art.6 La sezione D (esecuzione), è riservata a gruppi da 3 a 7 elementi.
6.1 I gruppi selezionati dovranno eseguire pubblicamente un programma della durata minima di 20 minuti.

art.7 Per partecipare al CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE DI ARRANGIAMENTO E COMPOSIZIONE DI BARGA occorre inviare mediante raccomandata A/R indirizzata alla segreteria del concorso c/o COMUNE DI BARGA, VIA DI MEZZO 45 - BARGA (LU) ITALIA, la seguente documentazione:
- Domanda di partecipazione contenente i dati anagrafici, l'indirizzo e il numero di telefono.
- dichiarazione di accettazione delle regole del concorso.
7.1 Per la sez. A e B, unire alla domanda:
DUE COPIE DELLA PARTITURA firmata dal concorrente e le parti di tutti gli strumenti SCRITTE CHIARAMENTE e in DUPLICE COPIA.
7.2 Per la sez. D, unire alla domanda:
Una registrazione del gruppo (CD o Cassetta) contenente almeno 2 brani della durata minima di almeno 6 minuti ciascuno.
- Curriculum del gruppo e dei suoi componenti.
- Nome e dati anagrafici dei componenti del gruppo e il numero di iscrizione all'ENPALS.
- Coloro che non sono iscritti all'enpals dovranno allegare anche una fotocopia della carta d'identità.
- Indirizzo e numero telefonico del responsabile.
7.3 TERMINI DI SCADENZA (data entro la quale devono pervenire le domande e il materiale al comune di Barga):
SEZ. A e B: 25 LUGLIO 2003 SEZ. D: 30 GIUGNO 2003

art.8 le partiture, e le registrazioni non verranno restituite.

art.9 Una commissione nominata dal direttore artistico selezionerà i brani (sez.AeB) e i gruppi (sez.D) che accederanno alla fase finale.
9.1 Per quanto riguarda la sez.A, il Mo Lee Konitz farà parte della commissione che selezionerà i brani inviati dai concorrenti, ma poichè non srà disponibile fino al 25 agosto, gli arrangiamenti prescelti non potranno essere comunicati ai concorrenti della sez.A prima del 26 agosto.
9.2 Gli autori o arrangiatori dei brani selezionati nelle sezioni A/B/C avranno un gettone di presenza per ammortizzare le spese di viaggio e soggiorno.
9.3 Per le sez. A/B/C l'esecuzione dei brani in concorso avverrà pubblicamente presso il Teatro dei Differenti di Barga nei giorni 28,29,30 agosto 2003.
9.4 Per la sezione D l'esecuzione avverrà a BARGA in luogo e data da definire entro i termini 10 luglio - 30 agosto. I concorrenti verranno informati con il dovuto anticipo.
9.5 I gruppi selezionati dovranno confermare mediante telegramma la loro partecipazione entro 7 giorni dalla comunicazione della avvenuta selezione.
9.6 Verrà accordato un gettone di presenza di 50,00 netti per ogni elemento dei gruppi (sez. D).

art.10 Una giuria internazionale formata da musicisti e giornalisti specializzati in musica jazz valuterà i lavori in concorso e assegnerà i premi.

art.11 verranno messi a disposizione i seguenti premi in denaro (al lordo delle ritenute di legge):
Sezione A 1° classificato 1.100,00 2° classificato 550,00
Sezione B 1° classificato 750,00 2° classificato 450,00
Sezione C 1° classificato 350,00
Sezione D 1° classificato 600,00
11.1 La premiazione avverrà in occasione della serata conclusiva della manifestazione che si terrà a Barga il 24 agosto 2002. La giuria, il cui giudizio è insindacabile, si riserva di segnalare con menzione altri brani meritevoli o di non assegnare uno o più premi.

art. 12 La manifestazione potrà essere ripresa in tutto o in parte per registrazioni radiotelevisive a scopo promozionale senza che i concorrenti abbiano nulla a pretendere, salvo quanto previsto dalla legge sulla tutela del diritto d'autore.

art. 13 Non verranno accettate partiture con organico non corrispondente al presente bando.

In seguito ad alcune richieste di chiarimenti si precisa che per la sezione A il ruolo di Konitz è quello di solista aggiunto all'organico.
Le partiture dovranno comprendere quindi le cinque parti della sezione sax più la parte di Konitz.

Regulations

The 16th Barga Jazz Festival will be entirely dedicated to the career and compositions of one of the most important contemporary jazz figures, the saxophonist and composer, Lee Konitz.
Konitz is one of the very few alto saxophonists of his generation to find an alternative style to the dominant Charlie Parker model: an almost classical, vibratoless tone, a subtle but intense sense of swing, and improvisation with greater lengths of melodic line and evenness of tone, are the characteristics that have had the greatest influence on Cool. After the historical partnership with Miles Davis in Birth of the Cool, he has played at various times in Lennie Tristano’s groups with Warne Marsh. As well as an extraordinary improviser, Konitz is also an original composer and as early as 1958 many of his pieces were collected by guitarist Billy Bauer.
Since the end of the 1960s he has spent much of his time in Europe, leading his own groups or taking part in projects with such top musicians as Bill Evans, Martial Solal, Michel Petrucciani, Red Mitchell, Paul Bley, Harold Danko and others: his presence has made a decisive contribution to raising the quality of jazz in Europe. In Rome, he recorded the historic Lp with Enrico Rava and Franco D’Andrea (Stereokonitz, RCA), and he has also played with Enrico Pieranunzi and Pietro Tonolo. His presence at Barga therefore seems to be the logical conclusion to an itinerary that has seen performances by all these musicians at the Festival.
Konitz will be present during the entire competition. He will open it with his Italian group and then as the guest of the Barga Jazz Big Band. The orchestra in section A of the competition will then play new arrangements of the Chicago saxophonist’s compositions or standards which have been interpreted by Konitz himself and which have influenced the history of jazz.

item 2 The contest is open to italian and foreign musicians.
2.1 The members of the Barga Jazz 2003 orchestra are excluded.
2.2 Winners of past editions may compete.

item 3 For the 2003 edition Section A is dedicated to "Lee Konitz".
3.1 the arrangements must be of Lee Konitz music or one of the following standards: Stella by Starlight, Cherokee, Nefertiti, Body and Soul, How Deep is the Ocean, Every Time we say Goodbye.

item 4 Sec. A arrangements and sec. B compositions must be for the following orchestral formation:
1° sax alto; 2° sax alto / clarinet
1° sax tenor / soprano; 2° sax tenor
sax baritone / bass clarinet
1° trumpet; 2° trumpet / flugelhorn
3° trumpet; 4° trumpet / flugelhorn
1° trombone; 2° trombone; 3° trombone; bass trombone
piano, guitar, double bass, drums, vibraphone
4.1 scores for any kind of orchestral formation other than that indicated in these regulations will not be accepted.

item 5 To be admitted to section C 2003 application should be made to the XXIX Seminary of Siena using the special card, before 30 June 2003. For further information apply to the Secretary's office of ''Siena Jazz'' - Fortezza Medicea 10, 53100 Siena tel. ++39 0577 271401.
5.1 The pieces produced by the pupils and admitted to the 2nd course will be analysed, discussed and corrected by Maestro Giancarlo Gazzani.
5.2 A specially constituted commission will select the pieces to be admitted to the final stage of the competition.

item 6 Section D (performance) is reserved to groups from 3 to 7 elements.
6.1 The groups selected must give a public performance of not less than 20 minutes duration which must include at least one piece relative to theme of this edition, ''Thelonious Monk'.

item 7 To participate in the BARGA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR ARRANGEMENT AND COMPOSITION you must send by registred letter with advice of receipt to the secretary's office c/o COMUNE DI BARGA, VIA DI MEZZO 45, 55051 BARGA, (LU), ITALY the following documents:
- Application to participate together with dates of birth, address end telephone number.
- Declaration of acceptance of the rules of the competition.
7.1 For sections A and B include with the request:
TWO COPIES OF THE SCORE signed by the contestant and CLEARLY WRITTEN copies of the parts for all the instruments in duplicate.
7.2 For section D include with the request:
A recorded cassette of the group containing a piece refering to the theme and a piece freely choosen each to be of not less than six minutes each.
- Curriculum of the group and its members.
- Name and dates of birth of group members and ENPALS incription number.
- Those not registred with ENPALS should also send photocopy of their identity card.
- Address and telephone number of the person responsible.
7.3 Expiry Dates (dates by which request and document must reach the Comune of Barga):
Section A e B 25th July 2002 Section D 30th June 2002

item 8 The scores, parts and cassettes will not be returned.

item 9 A commission nominated by the artistic director will selectel the pieces (sections A end B) and groups (section D) to be admitted to the final stage.
9.1 with reference to sec. A, Maestro Lee Konitz will be part of the committee that selects the pieces sent in by participants. However, as he will not be available until 25 August, sec. A participants will not be advised about which arrangements have been selected until 26 August.
9.2 For the composer and arrangers of the pieces selected for sections A/B/C an expenses voucher will be available to cover travel and lodging expenses.
9.3 Pieces participating in secs. A/B/C will be played at public performances at the Teatro dei Differenti in Barga on 28, 29, 30 August.e notice.
9.4 For Section D the performance will take place at Barga at a venue and date to be decided, but between the 10 July and the 30 August. The competitors will be informed with due notice.
9.5 The selected groups must confirm their partecipation by telegram whithin 7 days of being notified of their selection.
9.6 A voucher to the value of 50,00 nett will be avilable to every member of the group (sez.D).

item 10 An international jury formed of musicians and journalists specialized in Jazz will assess the works in competition and assign the prizes.

item 11 The following cash prizes will be offered (before tax):
Section A 1° placed 1.100,00 2° placed 550,00

Section C 1° placed 350,00
Section D 1° placed 600,00
11.1 The prize giving will take place on the final evening of the manifestation, at Barga on the ooth August. The jury, whose decision is final, reserves the right to recommend other meritorius pieces and to with hold one or more prizes.

item 12 The manifestation may be recorded in whole or in part for televisual promotional purposes and the competitors will have no claim for compensation, other than that provided for by copryright legislation.

item 13 Scores for an instrumentation other than that indicated will not be accepted.
