Continuing with the ''new direction'' inaugurated with the edition of 2000 dedicated to Enrico Rava, Barga Jazz this year celebrates the career of another musician whose international stature confers prestige on the entire italian jazz scene.

Gianluigi Trovesi

Gianluigi Trovesi has in fact succeeded in creating an extremely personal musical universe the draws nourishment from apparently disparate sources. The adored dance and band music of childhood, the discovery of jazz in all its forms, the search for popular roots in the italian classical tradition interweaves a fruitful dialogue in Trovesi's music, thanks to a multiform talent as improvising instrumentalist and very original composer.

Giorgio Gaslini

After having debuted on the international jazz scene as soloist in the groups of Giorgio Gaslini, Trovesi has explored new forms of european improvised music and the ancient structures of italian dance, and today in his latest productions has succeeded in finding a happy equilibrium between all his inspirations: for example a CD such as Les Hommes Armés, in which a popular melody on which has been based polifonic passages meets the blues and the modern jazz of Eric Dolphy.

Les Hommes Armés

In 2000 he was voted musician of the year in the Musica Jazz magazine top jazz pool, a referendum in which were also affirmed his groups and his discs.
Trovesi lead a remarkable octet, he has created an atypical nonet comprising three trios, one classical, one popular and one jazz for the performance of his suite Around a Midsummer's Night Dream and his duo with Gianni Coscia is an international phenomenon due to the success of their concerts and their latest CD relased by ECM.

Gianni Coscia

As a composer he is among other things author of pieces for the Italian Instabile Orchestra, for the French Orchestre National de Jazz directed by Paolo Damiani, for the project lyric/contemporary with the Banda di Ruvo di Puglia, and with the orchestra of Nembro - a town in the region of Bergamo where he was born and stil lives - he has performed, under the direction of Bruno Tommaso his Small Fairy Tales for an excellent CD.

Several times a welcome guest of Barga Jazz, this year Trovesi returns to celebrate with the Festival a happy moment in his career and to place at the disposal of the young composers his extraordinary voice on sax and clarinet.
A usual, the festival will be divided into four sections: that dedicated to the arrangements of compositions by Gianluigi Trovesi, that of the presentation of the best arrangements originating from the course held by Giancarlo Gazzani for the Seminari di Siena Jazz, and that of the selection of the best emerging jazz groups.

What is not usual is, however, the expansion of the festival to a series of Communes in the Valle del Serchio and Garfagnana who have seen in Barga Jazz the possibility to enrich and distinguish the summer manifestations in a zone more and more characterizzed by a quality tourism in which cultural activities are an integral part of the manifestations offered in the area; in this way the seed thrown by Barga Jazz expands its Roots (as states the title of a CD of Trovesi and Coscia) in a wide arc of common interest
